CBG Summer reading 2019
The purpose of CBG Academy summer reading is to encourage and promote a love of reading in all students and provide a common literacy experience for students prior to the first day of school. This year’s CBG Academy summer reading requirements provide students the opportunity to make choices, read books that interest and inspire them, and most importantly, enjoy their reading!
For the 2019-2020 school year, CBG Academy summer reading will be theme-based, meaning that students will not be required to read a specific book. Instead, students will read a book from any genre that encompasses their grade level theme and return to school in the fall ready to discuss this commonality with their peers and teachers. CBG Academy teachers have thought critically and carefully about a theme that is meaningful to each grade level. Middle school CBG Academy themes and descriptions are provided on page two.
Visit any Chesterfield County Public Library, Barnes and Noble at Chesterfield Towne Center, Books-a-Million in Colonial Heights, or the Midlothian 2nd and Charles for help in selecting your summer reading. School libraries and librarians are excellent resources, too! Additionally, the links below will provide a variety of book lists and descriptions. Parents are encouraged to review books to determine which selections are appropriate for their child. Please note that Chesterfield County Public Schools does not endorse any specific titles on the lists.

- “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi
- As you enter sixth grade, you will be faced with many changes: a new school, new teachers, and even a new time to wake up in the morning! These changes provide new, exciting opportunities, and you will soon realize that you a re the master of your world and the changes you wish to make.
- As your middle school journey begins, you will explore the theme of change and begin to explore change in literature, your school community, and your own life. This summer, sixth grade CBG Academy students will read a novel related to the theme of change which will be discussed throughout the year.
- “It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer.” - Albert Einstein
- While most would call Einstein smart, he attributes his own successes to grit, to “stay[ing] with problems longer.” Though few things in life are certain, you will face challenges. Challenges become problems when you succumb to them. Instead, you learn to dig deep, to show grit, and persevere. In 7th grade, you will explore the necessity of pairing grit with intelligence. It’s not your brains alone that will bring success but the character and work ethic that turns intelligence into action.
- During the summer, 7th grade CBG Academy students will read a novel with at least one character who displays grit and perseverance as he/she overcomes challenges. When you return to school in the fall, you will discuss the role grit and perseverance play in the lives of the characters in literature as well as real life.
Rising 8th Graders: HEROISM
- “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” - Arthur Ashe
- Your last year in middle school demands an adventure! This summer, rising 8th graders will join our reading quest for heroes. We all read to be entertained, of course, but we also devour stories to explore new worlds, gain a fresh perspective, and remind ourselves that we are not alone. Next year’s transition from middle to high school will be fraught with opportunities for complications, especially when encountering the unexpected. By exploring heroism in literature, you will gain some understanding of how to confront the unknown and find your way forward. Fellow Virginian and tennis great, Arthur Ashe, defined heroism as “the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” How might you define heroism?
- For summer reading, 8th grade CBG Academy students need to read a book from any genre that showcases a hero. Upon your return to school in the fall, you will share the stories of heroism you have uncovered through your literature selections.
